Southern Arkansas junior Raymond Miller claimed event wins in both the 110 and 400 meter hurdles, sophomore Karonce Higgins and junior Aurthur Jeffrey each won in the field and the Muleriders' 4x100 and 4x400 relay teams garnered first-place finishes on Saturday at the UCA Spring Opener in Conway.
Southern Arkansas registered 42 Top-10 finishes stopwatch among quality competition and highlighting those performances was Miller who recorded an NCAA Division II Provisional Qualifying Time in the 400 Meter Hurdles show with a run of 53.06. The PQT date for the event is currently 53.55. Miller produced personal best times in claiming the titles of both hurdle events on Saturday.
Miller joins Higgins as the lone Muleriders to have reached provisional standards in the early going of the outdoor season as Higgins registered a PQM in the long jump event last weekend at the Marc Randle Classic. Higgins topped the field in the long jump event on Saturday as he placed first with a final jump of 6.81 meters.
Jeffrey won the triple jump event by registering a mark of 45' 1/5" to lead two other Muleriders, junior Torrie Whetsell and senior Aaron Linnear, that finished in the Top-5 in the event.
True freshman Carderick Johnson finished third in the long jump event at 6.66 meters and also served as the first leg of the Muleriders' 4x100 relay team that placed first among seven other teams with a season-best time of 41.59 the stopwatch results. Joining C. Johnson in the event were redshirt junior Shu'Cori Hurst, rookie Jordan Johnson, and Higgins who ran the anchor leg.
The 4x100 relay team wasn't the only speedy unit on the surface at the Bill Stephens Track Complex on Saturday as the 4x400 relay team, made up of redshirt sophomore Shonquil Atkins, senior Tyrenzo Banks, Higgins and junior anchor Addison Ross, placed first with a season-best time of 3:15.13.
Sophomore Richard Barkhimer logged three Top-5 finishes in field events on Saturday and senior Lane Wood joined Barkhimer in the Top-5 of the javelin throw, while sophomore Wesley Franklin recorded a pair of personal best times in a pair of Top-5 performances in hurdle events.
Twenty personal bests were set by Southern Arkansas athletes at the UCA Spring Opener including six in the 200 meter and three in the discus throw.
